This page is for deletion requests where users request the deletion of media files or pages (deletion requests for categories are posted via Eatables:Categories for word). This is for requests that require legal input or community discussion prior to eventual deletion. Obvious copyright violations, duplicate images, and incorrectly-named images should be handled through the speedy deletion procedure rather than listed here.
Delight note: The procedures on this folio differ significantly from those of other Wikimedia projects such every bit the English language Wikipedia's Files for discussion. Please read the post-obit instructions carefully.
Overview
Anyone can comment on the deletion requests posted hither, and can express an opinion as to whether a particular file should be kept or deleted. Please give reasons for your opinion, preferably based on your knowledge of:
- whatever binding copyright law (encounter, eastward.1000., Commons:Copyright rules by territory and Eatables:Copyright rules by subject field matter);
- the applicability of whatever relevant Eatables policies, for example Commons:Deletion policy, Commons:Project scope or Commons:Photographs of identifiable people; or
- whatsoever relevant facts such equally appointment or place of publication, author, date of writer's expiry and then on.
In one case an administrator has sufficient information to come to a decision, the deletion asking volition be closed and the file either deleted or flagged equally kept. Where the determination to delete is an obvious 1 (eg the file is an obvious copyright violation or is otherwise speedy deletable) the deletion asking may be closed immediately. Less articulate cases should remain open for at least vii days. Complicated cases tin can remain open up for weeks or even months.
The debates are not votes, and the closing admin will apply copyright law and Eatables policy to the best of his or her ability in determining whether the file should be deleted or kept. Whatsoever expressed consensus will be taken into account so far every bit possible, just consensus can never trump copyright police nor can it override Commons Policy. If the closing admin is unable to say with reasonable certainty that the file can validly be kept, it should be deleted in accordance with Commons' precautionary principle.
It is non the task of the closing admin to appoint in detailed legal or factual research in social club to find a rationale to go along the file. Under the rules of evidence nosotros apply here, the burden of showing that the file tin can be validly hosted hither lies with the uploader and anyone arguing that information technology should be kept.
Deletion requests are not the place to attempt to change Commons policy, nor may requests be fabricated simply to make a indicate. Any such requests may be quickly airtight. Please use the Hamlet Pump or the policy talk folio if you wish to propose a change in policy.
Starting requests
- You can nominate private media files directly by going to the media description page and clicking on Nominate for deletion in the Tools menu on the left. More than detailed instructions and browser requirements are described at the help page. Click Nominate for deletion only on the page you would like to nominate for deletion.
- If you lot adopt to list the asking manually, meet Commons:Deletion requests/Listing a request manually.
- To asking deletion of multiple files (mass nomination), see Commons:Deletion requests/Mass deletion request.
If the media is a duplicate employ {{Duplicate}}, or was uploaded nether the wrong file proper name, use {{Rename}}.
Nomination guidelines
Please follow these guidelines to brand the deletion request every bit complete and clear every bit possible:
- When requesting deletion of a duplicate, add together the link to the duplicate image. The closing admin needs to see it.
- When requesting deletion of a redundant file, link to the redundant prototype. The closing admin needs to see it.
- When nominating an image suspected of copyright violation, say why the paradigm is a suspected copyvio. The more detail, the improve (a deletion request that only casts a vague allegation can be considered as "incomplete"). And "small-scale size and missing EXIF data" is not a deletion reason past itself (at best that is merely supporting evidence for copyvio).
- When nominating all the files of a category, list every file (non only the category itself). The closing admin needs to be able to easily click in the DR to access each image.
- When participating in a discussion of a mass deletion (i.e. 10+ images), strike out the images that are agreed to exist kept,
strikethem in the original listing. - When requesting deletion of a nudity/sexual activity/porn related images, mention this in the nomination. This allows reviewers and admins to ready themselves or choose not to review.
Closing discussions
In general, requests tin can exist closed by an ambassador later seven days. Deletion requests for obvious copyright violations can be closed earlier. Problematic or complex requests (such as highly used templates) can wait longer – even for several months if necessary. Non-admins may close a deletion request as keep if they have a good understanding of the process, and provided the closure is non controversial. If in uncertainty, don't do information technology.
Administrators endmost deletion requests are expected to provide acceptable explanation for their decision. In many cases, where in that location is trivial give-and-take and no disagreement with the request, no details are required. However the more circuitous a give-and-take, and the more users take argued for the contrary outcome than the ambassador'southward decision, the clearer the caption of the decision is required. In whatsoever upshot, administrators are expected to clarify or explain their decisions on request.
The nominator may request early on closure or withdrawal of a deletion request they started by adding a comment in the deletion request, for example when subsequent edits have corrected problems or missing details on the image folio. Deletion requests must not be closed by the nominator that created them unless washed earlier anyone else has contributed to the asking.
Administrators are encouraged to check whether the uploader was notified on their talk folio of the pending deletion request (unless the epitome is an obvious violation, in which case the paradigm tin be speedy deleted).
Procedure
- Add {{Delh}} simply above the department head with the file in it.
- Add a line (----), then, on a new line, either Kept or Deleted, an optional comment, your signature (~~~~), and {{Delf}} at the bottom of the request.
- If the discussion concluded to keep the file:
- Add {{Kept}} to the file talkpage.
- Remove the deletion template from the file description folio.
- Notation: An easier style to practise this is to use DelReqHandler (Internet Explorer is not supported), available to admins as a gadget under Special:Preferences.
- If necessary, add/re-categorize the deletion request into advisable categories.
Appealing decisions
If y'all disagree with an admin'south decision to delete a file, or not to delete it, you should first set out your reasons on the admin'due south talk page and inquire for afterthought. If the admin declines to contrary the decision, you tin request a review:
- for a file that was deleted, at Commons:Undeletion requests
- for a file that was kept, by renominating it for deletion. This should not exist done unless you lot can add together new information or clarification.
Bear in heed, though, that admins cannot ignore Commons policies or any applicable copyright constabulary even if a majority of users expressing opinions desire them to do then.
